obtain a Business Licence?
Business Licence
Business Licence Overview BUSINESS LICENCE APPLICATION FORM
Any person owning or operating a business within the Village of Kaslo must obtain an annual Business Licence. This applies to all retail and commercial establishments, management and professional firms, home-based businesses, tourist accommodations, short-term rentals and other operations.
Business Licences are issued annually. A renewal form will be sent to you by mail.
Liquor and Cannabis Licensing - LINK TO OUR POLICY HERE
Liquor and Cannabis licences are issued by the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) of the Provincial Government. However, the LCRB will not issue new licences or amend existing licences for certain types of proposal without the support of local government. It is therefore critical that you assess your proposal's ability to comply with all pertinent Village and Regional District regulations (e.g. business, zoning, sewer, building code). Please consult the current Fees and Charges Bylaw for the appropriate application fee required by the Village to process these types of application.
Changes to your Licence
Business owners are required to notify the Village of Kaslo of any changes to their business licence. Updates to an existing business licence should be updated no later than November 30th via letter to the Village office.
Regulations
The issuance of a business license is dependent on being in compliance with Village regulations. Regulations vary by type of business being conducted. The Zoning Bylaw regulates which business activities are permitted in each zone as well as home-based businesses. Significant changes of use or redevelopment can result in various regulatory issues around zoning and building regulation - you are encouraged to look into this before applying for a Business License in expectation of same-day turnaround.
- Zoning Bylaw 1130
- Guidance on Short Term Rental Accommodation businesses
- Municipal Role in Licensing Non-Medicinal Cannabis Retail stores
- New proposed Light Industrial proposals for properties serviced by the sewer utility are encouraged to contact the Village at a very early stage.
WEST KOOTENAY INTER-COMMUNITY BUSINESS LICENCE (ICBL)
The Village of Kaslo is participating in the West Kootenay Inter-Community Business Licence Program. The ICBL (an additional $100) allows mobile businesses and trades to operate in multiple municipalities, under one license, rather than obtaining non-resident licenses from each municipality. The Village's base rates are the most affordable in the participating communities and the number of communities covered by the ICBL is growing. To purchase an ICBL, you must first purchase a valid municipal businesses licence from one of the participating communities:
Kaslo; Salmo; Nelson; Castlegar; Creston; Rossland
Fees
The Village's fees are set regularly in its fees and charges bylaw Schedule 'G'. It can be found here.
These fees are subject to annual review and change by Council, so please check the fee with the Village office.
